Music for the year 2011 was one for the ages. I followed releases from about 50 bands in both the major and independent labels, and genres from alternative rock to metalcore. But there were a select few albums that I truly became in awe of based on the flow and overall sound of the album. Here is my top ten list of my favorite albums of 2011.

Album Review: New Found Glory - Radiosurgery

Posted by Ryan Kappy on 10/24 at 04:21 PM

Grade: A-

New Found Glory seems to always put out new records that become pop-punk gems in the genre that they have revolutionized.  Since their inception in 1997, they have released six full-length albums that each had their own unique qualities in the band members’ lives.  The band, consisting of Jordan Pundik (lead vocals), Chad Gilbert (lead guitars, backing vocals, composer), Steve Klein (guitar, lyricist), Ian Grushka (bass guitar), and Cyrus Bolooki (drums), are notorious for writing love based lyrics with pop hooks and breakdowns that have you either singing at the top of your lungs or jumping up and down to the ceiling.  The band has returned with their latest full length album, Radiosurgery, that turns their music back to their old days of pop punk that made them who they are today.

Album Review: This Time Next Year - Drop Out Of Life

Posted by Ryan Kappy on 10/13 at 02:35 PM

Grade: B+

There are times when I am walking to class and I want to listen to a band that will make me feel like I’m in eighth grade again - a time when I used to listen to mostly pop punk bands like Yellowcard or Sum 41.  That’s exactly what I did when I put on This Time Next Year‘s newest album, Drop Out Of Life.  This album took me back to my earlier youth bringing out all the excitement of discovering new music.  From Walnut Creek, CA, and with a roster that includes Peter Dowdalls (lead vocals), Brad Wiseman (guitar, backing vocals), Denis Cohen (guitar), Travis Pacheco (bass), and James Jalili (drums), the band has released an album that is easy going for the listener. The album is filled with pop punk tunes and sing along choruses that will have you yelling the lyrics out right back to your listening device.

Album Review: Thrice - Major/Minor

Posted by Ryan Kappy on 09/29 at 02:22 AM

Grade: A

Whenever you listen to a record, you are always anxious to hear what the first note will sound like from a guitar or how the vocals will sound. While you are listening, you hope the next track will be even better than the previous one. In the case of Irvine, California’s Thrice, that’s definitely true.

Album Review: The Devil Wears Prada - Dead Throne

Posted by Ryan Kappy on 09/13 at 01:49 PM

Grade: A

The Devil Wears Prada may have the same name as the popular movie with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, but this Dayton, OH sextet - with Mike Hranica (lead vocals), Jeremy DePoyster (rhythm guitar, clean vocals), Chris Rubey (lead guitar), Andy Trick (bass guitar), Daniel Williams (drums), and James Baney (keyboards) - are far from wearing the luxury products from which their name is derived.
