Hail to the Kings: Avenged Sevenfold is back!

I can’t believe how late I am with this! Avenged Sevenfold released their new single, “Hail to the King,” July 15th, and I have to say I’m impressed. It’s been a rough ride for the band since The Rev’s death at the end of 2009. Their last album, Nightmare, was released in 2010 immediately after the tragic news. After touring, the band took some time off from music to spend time with their families and the people they loved, explained in this exclusive interview. When the time felt right, they came back together to write and record their upcoming album, Hail to the King.

We get a hint of what’s to be expected with the release of the first single of the same name. It definitely has a Metallica feel to it. M Shadows even said it’s somewhat of a mix between Metallica’s self-titled album and Megadeth’s Countdown to Extinction. Arin Ilejay, formerly of the band Confide, has been brought on as the official drummer. We don’t get to hear any impressive drumming in this song, but the focus seems to be on the vocals and the lyrics, which seem to be speaking about a tyrannical leader. It starts with a catchy guitar riff, the signature riff throughout the whole song, and transitions to pounding drums. I thought of “Angry Again” by Megadeth when listening to the instrumentals, specifically the bass guitar. Did anyone else feel that way?

The song is slower than most of what A7X is know for. I noticed that the guitar solo in the song has been simplified, which is very unlike their past work, known for highlighting Synyster Gate’s solos. With that said, the solo is still very nicely done. The whole song is so reminiscent of metal from the 80s and early 90s, and I’m happy with the direction they’re going in. I’m looking forward to what the rest of the album is going to sound like. Check out the song below.

The official release of the album will be August 27th, just a little less than a month away.
