It’s “Pure Space” with Unicorn Kid

It’s another one of those weeks where I discover a new song, and it’s constantly on repeat. I know I’m not alone here, and this song might cause you to do the same. It’s Unicorn Kid’s “Pure Space.” I had never heard of this artist until about a week ago when I saw the name mentioned online somewhere that I can’t seem to remember now. I immediately searched it on Youtube, clicked on the first video I saw, and proceeded to enter the magical, super galactic world of the Unicorn Kid.

It’s like being in a video game, flying through the pixelated sky, not knowing what the next mission is, and not caring because the background music is better than the game itself. “Pure Space” is solely made up of instrumentals, which is a trait common throughout all of the one-man show’s work. Oliver Sabin is his birth name, and he started in Scotland at the age of 16. He’s known for incorporating game sounds into electronic music, and is credited with the revival of chiptune. Chiptune uses game console sound chips to create dance music. I think the main reason I enjoy this song so much is because of the game influences. If you’ve ever played Nights Into Dreams, you know what I mean when I say this song belongs in one of the dream worlds.

The video for “Pure Space” is posted below. Personally, I don’t like it and avoid watching it, letting the music create images in my mind. But that’s just me.
