Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at the State Theatre this Friday
Posted by Michael Giannelli on 01/18 at 10:38 AM
Energy and passion, these are some of the attributes that Sharon Jones brings to the table. An engaging performer and singer, she puts herself out there with everything she’s got. Think of her as a late-blooming, female version of James Brown.
Evoking a feel straight from the heyday of funk and soul in the 1960s and 70s, the group is considered one of the forerunners in a movement to bring that music back to life. The group has even gone as far as rejecting modern recording equipment, instead favoring the classic sound of analog recordings.
Known for their intense touring schedule, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings play major festivals such as Lollapolooza, Austin City Limits, and Bonnaroo, while also landing on small town stages like the State Theatre. But even at 53 years old she shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to vaunt her golden voice across the country and overseas.
Over the past few years, appreciation for her talent has grown beyond her live audience, as shown in her acting in, singing in, and also recording much of the soundtrack to Denzel Washington’s “The Great Debaters.”
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings formed in the late 1990s for the independent Daptone Records in Brooklyn, NY.
