The Wrap Up

With the end of the Fall semester, here’s a rundown of my top three acts from this fall.
3. Rebelution
This group of Californians was really a whole new experience for me. Straying from my typical music scene, I submerged myself into the realm of reggae. I thoroughly enjoyed the feel good, chill atmosphere that the band and crowd formed. On top of that, I found the groovy rhythms to be laced over with fresh musical ingenuity.
2. Atlas Soundtrack
These guys really displayed a creative touch that fused elements of reggae with hip-hop, similar to Rage Against the Machine. Hearing them blast their beats with a sizzling guitar really got me enjoying their compositions. “The Devil’s Coming” easily embedded itself as one of my favorite original songs of the year. My only regret is that I didn’t hear more of them.
1. Memphis Hat
Yes the winner of the Mezzanine’s battle of the bands (that also featured Atlas Soundtrack) also takes the top spot of the semester for me. These guys rocked the stage, energized the crowd, and displayed some talented musicianship. They did it all, and did it well. You don’t see very many acts any more with an original classic rock/blues style. They were able to captivate the crowd while displaying an aptitude for their instruments. I really hope these guys can continue to garner more local praise and find their way into more venues.
