How the Earth was made:  Central Pennsylvania

Historic: other

2:00 PM

Join us at the Park Office/Visitor Center for a fascinating look into our local geologic history presented by Dr. David “Duff” Gold, Emeritus Professor of Geology, Pennsylvania State University.

Our local geology represents some 300 million years of sedimentary cycles representing at least three major collisions between North America, Europe and Africa.  It is during these cycles that the local rocks were deposited, starting from the coral reefs producing the limestone beds to the organic-rich marine basins that today form the gas-rich Marcellus black shale formations.  Our landscape is what remains of mountains that one time may have rivaled the Andes in height and grandeur.
