Penn State Altoona film series; Tulpan
Film
7 p.m.
Kazakh documentarian Sergey Dvortsevoy’s first narrative feature is an exceptional film that uses the Russian steppes as a vast backdrop for a young ex-sailor’s dreams of becoming a sheep farmer with his own flock. Released from his military service Asa (Askat Kuchinchirekov), returns to the wind-swept plains of his childhood to seek employment and a bride. Unfortunately, there is but one eligible maiden in hundreds of miles—the mysterious and yet alluring Tulpan. There is just one problem: Tulpan thinks Asa’s ears are too big. Shot in long takes, the film relies on both its setting and its cast for its authenticity. Remarkably (it is NOT a documentary) its cast is populated by non-actors, whose performances are naturalistic and true. In two astounding scenes, a mother camel attacks a vet treating her son and Asa helps a ewe give birth in a real-time sequence.
