Shape-note singing

Community Events

7:00-8:30pm

2nd and 4th Mondays of every month. Come and learn to sing 4-part harmony with shape notes in the Sacred Harp tradition. Since the early 1800’s, shaped notes have enabled generations of singers unable to read music to sing 4-part folk hymns, fugues and anthems. Singing is from “The Sacred Harp”, a collection of popular tunes written by amateur American tunesmiths of the time. This is not performance music, and singers arrange themselves facing inward in a “hollow square”. Individual voice quality is unimportant, and the music is characterized by strong rhythms and simple open harmonies. An introductory singing school begins at 6:45, and the main singing begins at 7:00. Beginners and listeners are welcome.
