The Fourth at the Fort
Historic: living history
11 AM - 4 PM
The Fourth of July at Fort Roberdeau—Altoona, PA, June 23, 2009
Celebrate America’s independence at a place where it all began. Bring a picnic and join in the traditional Fourth of July festivities at Fort Roberdeau from 11 AM until 4 PM.
The Fourth of July is a special day at Fort Roberdeau. The original fort was built during the American Revolution to protect a lead mining operation, but immediately became a refuge for local farmers and their families who supported the cause of independence. There were no British redcoats battling George Washington’s army out here, but there were plenty of fighters, including militiamen, British and American rangers, Seneca and other American Indians, and private citizens protecting their families and farms.
Throughout the day, costumed staff will be demonstrating some of the chores of 18th century frontier life, including colonial cooking. The buildings and exhibits of the park will be open for self-guided tours throughout the afternoon. Bring your own “star-spangled” picnic and spend the afternoon at the only public historic site dating to the Revolutionary War in Central Pennsylvania.
In keeping with the spirit of independence, admission to the fort is free on the Fourth.
