Why Sports Observers Need to Know History

The panel features a strong lineup of Penn State faculty, including:

  * Sports historian Ronald A. Smith, professor emeritus of exercise and sports science. A former minor league baseball player, he has researched and taught about intercollegiate athletics for 28 years. Professor Smith has authored Sports and Freedom: The Rise of Big-Time College Athletics and Big-Time Football at Harvard.
  * Professor Mark S. Dyreson, associate professor of kinesiology whose research focuses on the history of sport and culture in the modern world with emphasis on the late Nineteenth and Twentieth Century United States.
  * Professor Dan Beaver, associate professor of history, a researcher of community and the nature of conflict in early modern England who plans to teach a baseball course next year.
