Actually the CD was released in 2006, but it just came in the mail from a small label in MA, Wepecket Records. Bemis is still in his 20’s, and by all indications is a strikingly original voice. That voice isn’t always comfortable in your ear—sometimes it’s pretty raw, but every song is worth listening to, and several songs are downright sweet and gentle. Bemis’ bio describes a somewhat vagabond life: no car—travel by bus, train, or hitchhiking—lodging and meals provided by music lovers. There’s a more conventional aspect too, a one-room house in southwestern MI, and efforts involved with a community music hall in his hometown. Given that his CD, Rail to Reel, arrived 3 years after its first release, I tend to think there’s not too much marketing hype intertwined with Bemis’s story. I was so struck by the CD that I offered to set up a house concert for Bemis the next time he’s passing through PA.
