Responding to the Jobs Crisis / Learn About the Project
Central Pennsylvania has been hit hard by job loss. In some towns, the unemployment rate has reached 13% or higher.
WPSU created this comprehensive website in response to the unemployment crisis and Pennsylvania's changing economy. It was designed to answer the questions: What industries are growing? How do trends vary over time and among counties? Where are the success stories?
The website features data, news articles, and expert commentaries categorized by county. Simply click on a county to view unemployment rate and median household income. You can also quickly see a list of top employers and top industries. Scroll along the timeline to view changes over the last ten years.
Under the interactive map, you can read an overview of the county provided by an expert economist, and explore relevant articles from local newspapers.
Share Your Story
Help WPSU to document the shifts in Pennsylvania's job market by completing the share form. Whatever your story, whatever your perspective, we want to hear it.
Data was provided by the Pennsylvania Data Center and Pennsylvania's Department of Labor and Industry. Expert commentaries were written by Ted Fuller and Penn State's Center for Economic and Community Development.
