Take Note: Bucktail Regiment

Take Note: Bucktail Regiment

Three days after the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter, President Lincoln issued a call for the militia.  By May of 1861, Pennsylvania responded with enough volunteers to fill 25 regiments-more than 75,000 men.  The 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, known as the Bucktails, were recruited from the timbering counties of northwestern Pennsylvania. They became part of one of the finest fighting forces in the Union Army. Who were the Bucktails?  Why is it important to keep their history alive?   Clarence Walker is a member of Company G's Civil War reenactors. William Robertson is a writer and lifelong student of the Civil War. His most recent book is, The Bucktails' Shenandoah March, published by White Mane Publishing Company of Shippensburg, Pa.
