Feature Segment:
A visit to Tom & Joes Restaurant, established 1933
Tom
& Joes Restaurant, in downtown Altoona, is a bona-fide American
diner. The sounds and smells of homemade french fries permeate the air,
black and white photographs of waitresses 60 years past line the walls,
and booths and jukeboxes surround the room. Begun by two brothers in 1933,
this eatery has withstood the test of time while keeping its old-fashioned
charm. Perched on bar stools, viewers learn the restaurants history
from one who knows it best, George, the current owner and Toms son.
Dressed in a white apron, he stands merrily over a large iron skillet
as he tells his story. His dad and uncle, Joe, opened the restaurant in
1933. George started working in 1948 and took over the business in 1973.
He smiles as he says, "Weve been here ever since..."
