Founded in 1787, Ebensburg is located “up the mountain,” as local folks like to say. At the turn of the 20th century, Ebensburg was a summer resort town for people from cities like Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. who were drawn to its cool climate. Today, Ebensburg still offers peaceful, small-town living from hiking and fishing at the local lake, which according to legend is home to a 40 lb catfish, to a friendly downtown and quiet, well-kept neighborhoods.
Feature Segment: Originally the summer retreat of Pittsburgh coal baron Charles Schwab, the Schwab Estate is now open to the public and features vast, beautifully manicured gardens. Eventually donated to the Franciscans, religious and non-religious statues are sprinkled throughout the gardens. The Southern Allegheny Museum of Art is part of the Schwab Estate and offers a variety of interesting exhibits throughout the year. |
