Feature Segment:
A step back in
time at the St. Marys Historical Society
Meandering
through the St. Marys Historical Society, viewers find walls covered with
black and white photographs, glass cabinets filled with town heirlooms,
and mannequins dressed in traditional clothes of the past century. Dick
Dornish, the historical societys director, gives viewers a guided
tour. "The historical society was begun in 1960. Its unique
in being one of the few municipal, as opposed to county, historical societies,"
says Dornish. Viewers pass through an area of wrought iron typewriters,
and come to a room adorned with mounted newspaper clippings and old pictures.
Motioning to a large glass case, Dornish says, "Heres our photograph
collection; several photographs are on display at all times." A room
devoted to research through microfiche computers is a new addition to
the St. Marys Historical Society. Leading viewers through the new room,
Dornish says, "We have five microfilm readers, and they are in constant
use. People come here to do genealogical research and other kinds of research."
With a glimpse of a town map, Dornish concludes, "The historical
society holds all that is representative of St. Marys for this generation
and future generations. Owned by the community, the historical society
preserves for the community."
