John Stroup / Republican

Biography:

John StroupJohn Stroup believes America has neglected its rural roots. After working in the private sector in Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, Stroup returned to his hometown of Clarion. As sales manager of his family’s small business, he understands the challenges facing small businesses in rural Pennsylvania. Stroup also learned about the issues facing rural health care through his position as executive director of the Clarion Hospital Foundation.

Stroup, Clarion Borough Mayor, has also chaired the local Chamber of Commerce and has organized the local Little League.

He and his wife have raised their three children in Clarion County.

Single payer doesn’t work. Medicare bureaucracy runs up cost and Part D has been a huge problem. So don’t break the system further by involving government more. Universal healthcare must be private.

Pennsylvania Brain Drain

I do not expect my representative in Washington to address this issue. It is a state issue.

Campaign Finance Reform

None of the other approaches are adequate. The system needs to start over from scratch.

Iraq

I believe we should stay in Iraq for as long as we are making progress toward the goals of the Iraqi government taking over, and the Iraqi army providing adequate security.

Climate Change

We do not know if global climate change is happening. We cannot act until we study it further.

Energy Independence

Focus on extracting existing fossil fuels from American territories.

No Child Left Behind

I agree with the law’s goals, but not with its “one-size-fits-all” approach to education that overemphasizes testing and doesn't provide enough money to schools to achieve success. The law should be modified.

Transportation Funding

The state should save money by not using highway safety funds to pay for busing. Once that change is enacted, the state can get a clearer sense of its transportation funding needs.
